The MoPac Arena Playdowns Committee is pleased to announce that we will be holding playdowns to determine men’s and women’s teams to send to the 2023 USA Curling Arena National Championships.

Our MoPac event will be held from Friday, Sept. 29, to Sunday, Oct. 1, at the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club in Oakland, California. While a draw schedule isn’t available, games may begin Friday morning. Sunday games will start in the late morning and the championship games will likely conclude in the late afternoon.

The event fee is $400 per team, although we are interested in potentially reducing the fee if we have more than 16 teams. We’re still determining when payment will be due, but anticipate it will be around the close of registration. See below for the real time team registrations:

Arena nationals will be held Nov. 9 to Nov. 12, at Curl Mesabi in northern Minnesota.

Teams that wish to enter our regional playdown event will need to comply with USA Curling’s 2023-2024 Championship Qualifying Procedures, which may be found at https://www.usacurling.org/qualification-procedures.

Of particular importance are the event eligibility rules for arena participants and teams:

“2. Event Eligibility: U.S. citizenship or residency is required. In addition to the USA Curling membership requirements in Section I, all team members must be dues-paying, league-playing members of the same USA Curling Member Arena Club. Team members cannot curl in more than ten league games at any dedicated ice clubs in the calendar year of the championship. Curling in bonspiels at dedicated ice clubs does not affect event eligibility. Delivery of the stone with a stick device will be allowed. Wheelchair curlers are allowed to compete but must adhere to the USA Curling Wheelchair Curling rules.”

We’re still evaluating the event rules with our MoPac competition committee, but we’re planning to follow the USA Curling rules for competitive play as closely as possible. That includes requiring sweepers to use World Curling Federation-compliant brush heads.

We’re thankful to be working with the San Francisco Bay Area Curling Club on this event. As part of helping to share the impact of running a playdown, we will be asking teams to provide volunteers at times during the event to help with ice crew and in the warm room. We’re planning to have a sign-up form ready when the draw schedule is released so teams can plan accordingly.

Finally, we’re excited to run this event for all the terrific teams that hail from arena clubs. MoPac has always had strong participation in arena nationals and we’re proud to continue that tradition.

This is our first time running this event, so there may be things that we haven’t yet addressed. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any comments or questions.

Good curling,
