“You may now start your practice.” And with that announcement the MoPac 2024 Women’s Arena Playdowns began. Six teams representing four clubs took to the LTEC ice on July 19th which saw teams play five round robin games in two days before the Sunday finals. Beautiful as always, Tahoe did not disappoint; Summer Sierra temperatures allowed teams to enjoy mostly sunny afternoons between games.

Team Asis is Jennifer Asis, Melissa Wheeler, Julie Wolf, Jaclyn Pyrlarz, Kathalin Alsmeier

Team Asis (Silicon Valley Curling Club) took the win securing their berth to the USA Curling Arena Nationals Championships taking place October 23 – 27, in Wausau, Wisconsin. The winning team, lead by MoPac President Jennifer Asis, finished with an impressive 6-0 record! Wine Country Curling Club’s Team Feldman finished second and composite Team Mewers (OCCC/Oval/WCCC) took the third spot.

Among the highlights on Saturday afternoon Teams Mewers and Barbree took a break mid-game and joined together in what MoPac social media announcer Ryan Olson called, “not the best use of a technical timeout”; the two teams held signs wishing Ryan a happy birthday. The spectating crowd cheered on and broke into a spontaneous birthday song wishing Ryan the best on his day.

“That’s how MoPac rolls” quipped a spectator. Yes, it’s a game of intense strategy, artful shots, enthusiastic sweeping, overall balance and skill but it is also a game played with a lot of heart.

Please tune into USA Curling coverage in October for the 2024 Arena National Championships.
